President-elect Donald Trump has chosen retired Marine Gen. James N. Mattis to be secretary of defense.
To accept the job, Mattis will need Congress to pass new legislation to bypass a federal law stating that defense secretaries must not have been on active duty in the previous seven years. Congress has granted a similar exception just once, when Gen. George C. Marshall was appointed to the job in 1950. But it looks like this was all checked out and deals were made before he was announced as selected.
Retired Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis, a hardliner on Iran and a revered figure in the Marine Corps, is an excellent choice for defense secretary, President-elect Donald Trump said Sunday.
Marines of all stripes expressed excitement about retired Gen. Mattis — a revered figure who led Camp Pendleton troops into battle in Iraq.
Mattis, who retired with four stars in 2013, met with Trump this weekend as a candidate on the short list to direct the Defense Department. Afterward, the president-elect called the Marine icon “impressive” in a tweet.
Mattis was one of the most vocal opponents to pulling out of Iraq when Obama gave the orders. Matts knew it would cause the vacuum of radical violent jihadists as it did. The pullout caused ISIS to go from controlling a few countries, to over-taking almost 30 countries.
Mattis is a bad-ass. Period. Trump is moving forth with his promise to strengthen the military and create the peace through strength that Reagan did during the 80’s
Here is the “Mad Dog” ripping Obama.
