Internet Prank May Have Tricked Media Into Believing Shooter Was Member Of White Nationalist Group

Yet Another Internet Prank That Makes National News?

The power of the ‘internet troll’ is more prevalent today that it ever has been in history.  It takes just a quick search on YouTube to find all of the cases that have made national news that stemmed from an online chatroom called 4chan

A popular ‘meme’ when a national news story like a shooting happens for instance, is to blame “Sam Hyde.”  This has worked many times in the past and has actually caused countless news outlets, including a United States Congressman to name Sam Hyde as the shooter in the Texas Church Shooting.

Well it looks like this has happened again.  Many mainstream outlets, just as they fell for the Sam Hyde joke as well as other 4chan pranks, are reporting that Nikolas Cruz, the man named in the school shooting in Florida, was a member of a local white nationalist group.

Even Local law enforcement sources say they have not found any connection between accused Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz and a Tallahassee-based paramilitary group.

Leon County law enforcement sources told the Tallahassee Democrat that they could not find information linking Cruz to the Republic of Florida Militia, as first reported by the group’s self-proclaimed leader Jordan Jereb.

Leon County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Grady Jordan said investigative work Thursday did not yield any connections.

“We are still doing some work but we have no known ties between the ROF, Jordan Jereb or the Broward shooter,” Jordan said.
