A laptop that contains sensitive national security information, including the floor plans of the Trump Tower and files related to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton‘s email probe, was stolen from a Secret Service vehicle, The New York Daily News reported on Friday.
“The U.S. Secret Service can confirm that an employee was the victim of a criminal act in which our Agency issued laptop computer was stolen. An investigation is ongoing and the Secret Service is withholding additional comment until the facts are gathered.”
Police sources told the publication that authorities have been searching for the computer since it was discovered missing on Thursday morning.
“The Secret Service believes this is a petty theft, which is not uncommon in the area, not a national security incident in which the agent was targeted,” a former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino said.
Since the agent left her PIV card with access codes with the computer, that makes it easier to access the information on the computer. However, the good news that is once the computer is connected to the internet, it can be wiped, according to Bongino.
According to the report, some materials that were stolen along with the laptop were recovered by law enforcement. These included a bag with a Secret Service insignia and some coins.
